Recycling collections

Our council is committed to recycling as much of our borough's waste as possible and we provide free recycling collections for residents. We encourage everyone to recycle more of the right things and help make Hillingdon a green and sustainable borough.

Festive recycling

During Christmas and New Year, help reduce the amount of waste our borough generates by reusing and recycling items wherever you can.

Cards, paper and catalogues

In your dry mixed recycling (clear bags), you can recycle greeting cards, wrapping paper and catalogues.

Please note: Glitter and foil cannot be recycled and will contaminate materials during the recycling process. If something has glitter or foil on it, remember to put it in your general waste.

Christmas trees

In January, you can recycle Christmas trees with our usual garden waste collection, providing:

  • all decorations and pots are removed
  • trees taller than 6 foot are cut in half
  • your tree is placed at the edge of your property boundary and visible to collectors.

If you live in a flat:

  • collections are available between Monday 6 and Friday 17 January - email wastesupervisor@hillingdon.gov.uk to book
  • trees should be placed next to your bin store or collection point for waste bins, ensuring access to the bins is not blocked. Please do not put trees inside the communal bins.

Please note: Artificial trees should be taken to one of our waste and recycling centres or disposed of using our bulky waste collection service.

Food waste

Don't throw away leftovers - why not freeze them or try out a new recipe and create a new dish?

Food waste can also be recycled using our food waste recycling scheme.  During these cold winter months, if you line the caddy with compostable corn starch bags or newspaper, it will help keep the caddy clean and stop the food from freezing to the inside of the caddy.
