Sensory issues are common in people with autism.
Behaviours you may recognise in your child
- Avoids messy or dirty hands and/or feet.
- Gets upset by busy places and/or cluttered spaces.
- Gets upset by noise - for example, does not like loud noises and/or specific noises.
- Gets upset if touched and/or doesn't like the feel or touch of some things - or over-touch, such as gripping, holding tightly.
- Becomes upset with a particular smell or strong smells.
- Is overwhelmed by bright lights - or is fixated on bright lights or moving objects.
- Becomes distressed if the environment is too hot, too cold or varies quickly.
Support for children under 5

Step 1: Speak to your school nurse or special educational needs co-ordinator. You can also contact Children's Integrated Therapy Service (opens new window) for advice. Your child might be able to get help at school through their My Support Plan.
