Summer Reading Challenge volunteers

Every year, Hillingdon Libraries deliver the Summer Reading Challenge from July to September. Sign up to be a volunteer and help promote and deliver the programme to other children and young people.

We need young people (aged 14 and over) who are reliable, enthusiastic, organised, creative, enjoy working with children, and speaking with members of the public of all ages and backgrounds.

It's a great opportunity to gain experience working in a library, work as part of a team and engage with members of the public.

The days and times you volunteer will be agreed in advance. We will be flexible and supportive, and staff will be on hand to help when you are volunteering in our libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Help with the setting up and running of Summer Reading Challenge events and activities, including setting out chairs and equipment, handing out materials and clearing the space after the event is finished.
  • Communicate with those attending, promoting the library service and passing user comments and feedback to library staff.
  • Make suggestions for future activities, based on feedback from attendees and resources available.
  • Encourage children to take part in the challenge and promote the stock within our libraries.
  • Talk to parents and carers about the Summer Reading Challenge, and the benefits of participating and encouraging the children to want to participate.
  • Help promote the event by word of mouth.
  • Help to run a 'Makers Meet Up' session as part of your role. This is an activity to help children to re-imagine and recycle/upcycle everyday objects, eg a pair of jeans could become a phone bag, a cardboard box could become an arcade machine. Use our ideas or bring your own!
  • There's also an opportunity to be part of our family day out event - The Imagination Station at the Great Barn in Ruislip on Thursday 15 August. Help out with activities, such as making bookmarks, weaving, LEGO building, or showcase your Makers Meet Up makes.

Skills required

  • You have good communication, organisational skills and are creative.
  • You are responsible, confident, dependable and enthusiastic.
  • You are happy to lend a hand to most things.
