September flooding

On Sunday 22 and Monday 23 September, large parts of the southeast experienced more than a month's worth of rain within a day. Unfortunately, this heavy rainfall overwhelmed the capacity of the drainage and river network in parts of our borough, leading to significant flooding.

Purpose of a flood investigation

We understand that property flooding causes severe distress and disruption, which lasts long after waters recede. As the Lead Local Flood Authority, we aim to understand the full impact of the flooding, identify sources, and evaluate the responses of agencies, such as the Environment Agency and Thames Water.

We are carrying out an investigation into the flooding and looking to secure as much evidence as possible from those impacted. Our investigation aims to:

  • identify the sources and causes of the flooding
  • assess the actions taken by key responders
  • understand post-flooding concerns related to recovery and cleanup
  • develop recommendations to reduce future flood risks and impacts.

The information from the investigation will inform our next steps and to consider what actions are necessary and where.

How you can help
