When a baby is born, their birth must be registered within 42 days with the local registrar.

Book an appointment to register a birth

Please arrive 5 minutes before your appointment time. If you turn up late for your appointment, you will not be seen and have to make another appointment.

  • We ask that only essential persons attend. For married or civil partnered parents, only 1 parent should attend. If parents are not married or in a civil partnership, both should attend.
  • If you wish to purchase birth certificates at the appointment please have a credit or debit card with you. Certificates cost £11 each. If you do not have a card with you at the appointment, certificates can be ordered online and will be posted to you.

Where to register

You should register a birth in the borough where the baby was born. If the baby was born in the borough of Hillingdon, the birth must be registered at our Hillingdon Register Office.

If you cannot register the birth in the area where the baby was born, you can 'make a declaration' to the Registrar in Hillingdon and we will send your details to the correct office.

Please note: If you purchase a full birth certificate, you will need to contact the register office where the declaration was sent and make payment to them with a credit or debit card for the certificate.

Documents to bring to the registration appointment

  • Passports or British driving licence for both parents
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)
  • Baby's red birth book, issued by the maternity hospital

Information needed by the Registrar

The Registrar will see you in private and record details about the baby and both parents. You will be asked for the following information:

  • place and date of the birth

  • parents' names, surnames and address
  • places and dates of parents' birth
  • date of parents' marriage or civil partnership (if applicable)
