Hillingdon welcomes new Mayor

Thursday 14 May: Cllr Teji Barnes was elected the new Mayor of Hillingdon at the council's Annual General Meeting meeting on 14 May. She replaces retiring Mayor, Cllr David Yarrow, in the prestigious role to highlight positive work taking place across the borough.

Cllr Teji Barnes, MayorThe Mayor will attend local events, performances and exhibitions, and welcome schools and community groups to the Mayor's Parlour and Council Chamber when the coronavirus restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so. She will be accompanied by Mayoresses, Roma Bell and Elouisa Bell, and the Mayor's Escort, Cameron Bell.

Cllr Barnes grew up in West Drayton and Hayes and now lives in Ruislip with her three children. She said: "I've been a councillor for Cavendish ward since I was first elected in 2014, and I am looking forward to the year ahead serving the whole community as Mayor of Hillingdon.

"The role will utilise many of the skills I have gained over the years, including teaching, owning my own business, working in finance, volunteering with the Samaritans, and of course, my role as a councillor. The highlight of the year will be meeting all the different residents and helping to improve their quality of life.

"During my time as Mayor, I will be raising funds for the Centre for ADHD and Autism Support Charity, Ruislip. The charity is so beneficial to local residents and the staff are wonderful at empathising, engaging, educating and supporting individuals and their families who live with the difficulties of these conditions."

Retiring Mayor, Cllr David Yarrow, spoke of his time spent as Mayor of Hillingdon. He said: "I've loved meeting the many different groups and communities that make Hillingdon such a great place to live. It's been a memorable year with visits to different schools, care homes, retail outlets, voluntary organisations, and a real highlight has been celebrating milestone 100th birthdays with local residents."
