What we do for a safer Hillingdon

CCTV in Hillingdon

Our closed circuit television (CCTV) service is designed to make Hillingdon a safer place to live, work and visit.

Our operators work in partnership with the local police, community and businesses to help in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour in the borough.

Shops and businesses

When planning the installation of a CCTV system, the first step is to identify and define the problem - for example, a security threat, a public safety issue or any number of other vulnerabilities.

Visit GOV.uk for information on setting up and using CCTV cameras (opens new window).

Private cameras

The law regarding private individuals or businesses using CCTV is complex. Making sure that all CCTV systems collect, record, store and share images in line with the Data Protection Act 2018 is the role of the Information Commissioner's Office (opens new window).

If your camera covers any areas beyond the boundaries of your property (for example, neighbouring gardens or the street), it may not be exempt from the Data Protection Act under the domestic purposes exemption. If you cannot rely on the domestic purposes exemption, you will need to register with the ICO as a data controller.
