Haste Hill and Uxbridge public golf courses - maintenance update Friday 10 May

All greens at Haste Hill and Uxbridge received spring renovations in March; this went well, despite the unfortunate wet weather. Deep soil aeration was carried out to alleviate compaction and aid water penetration, top dressing was then applied to restore surface levels and improve the soil growing medium. Since the renovations, we have continued to spring fertilise these surfaces to aid in growth. In April, Haste Hill's greens received hollow coring to improve surface draining and oxygenation, a further top dressing was applied.

At the beginning of May, we carried out weed control spraying to all greens, surrounds, tees, fairways and semi rough.

Week commencing Monday 13 May at Uxbridge Golf Course, greens showing disease scarring will be verticut to thin out the sward and remove dead organic matter. Overseeding will follow to re-establish putting surfaces; we hope to see a visible improvement by the end of June - pending favourable growing conditions.

In the same week at Haste Hill Golf Course, the greenkeeping team will scarify some of the worst fairways, which were burnt by last summer's extraordinary heatwave. This will involve the removal of moss and dead organic material; it will cause visable bare areas on the fairways but will provide aeration to enhance future growth. Week commencing Monday 20 May, slot seeding will be carried out; this will involve drilling grass seed into the soil, maximising the percentage of germination. Growth will be dependant on favourable weather conditions.

Poplar trees between the fourth and fifth holes at Uxbridge Golf Course will be lifted to six metres and overhanging branches will be cut back. These works should be completed by the end of July.

The first tee wall at Uxbridge Golf Course is currently being refurbished, with the view to include steps.

General spring mowing and maintenance will continue during all additional works.

Whilst we are constantly endeavouring to improve the golf courses, we thank you for your understanding towards these necessary maintenance works and ask you to remember that greenkeepers have the right of way at all times. We would appreciate your support when playing, by repairing two pitch marks on each green and replacing your divots during play.
