The plan sets out the actions the council intends to take from 2025-2028 in order to tackle the climate emergency. The document reaffirms the council's ambition to have net-zero carbon operations by 2030, along with preserving and enhancing the borough's biodiversity, improving waste management, managing the risk of flooding and helping to become one of the greenest boroughs in London.

On 10 October, the council's Cabinet agreed to put its updated Strategic Climate Action Plan out for public review, with the consultation set to run from Monday 11 November until Sunday 12 January, 2025.

Among the actions proposed in the plan is a dedicated campaign to work closely with local schools on actions they can take to lower their own carbon footprint.

The council will use its work and successes to lead by example, giving communities focus and direction for their own carbon reduction efforts and will work more closely with expert third parties and partner agencies to ensure it is prioritising its actions in the most appropriate way

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said: "Our revised Strategic Climate Action Plan sets out how we'll build upon the great work we've already achieved through expansive tree-planting, installation of flood resilience measures, electric vehicle charging bays and significantly reducing the carbon footprint across our own estate.

"The document will be reviewed regularly to ensure our plans remain on track and up-to-date, which is vital in the light of events such as September's flash floods, where the borough experienced a month's rainfall in a matter of hours.

"We're making great strides in reducing the organisation's carbon footprint and will build on this progress by working in collaboration with residents and partners, so we need everyone to share their views and together we can create a greener future."

Feedback from residents and other participants will be taken into consideration when preparing the final document, which the council expects to formally adopt next spring.
