Monday 15 July, 2024: Hillingdon Council's Learn Hillingdon Adult and Community Education prospectus for 2024/25 is now available with hundreds of part-time day and evening courses to help residents aged 19 and above gain new skills, get prepared for work or promoted or gain a qualification.

There are also a range of fun, creative and social sessions, including art, sewing and fashion, photography, flower arranging and languages. As well as courses where participants can learn new skills and improve their health and wellbeing, such as cookery sessions, exercise classes, programmes to support mental health and others to help people live more sustainably.

The low-cost options are delivered at Hillingdon's three adult education centres, in the community and virtually, with many fully funded by the government.

If residents are interested in a career helping to care for others, there are courses to provide them with the knowledge and skills to progress towards roles in a range of professions, including community mental health services, residential care, home-based care and healthcare support services.

If residents would like to support children with their early development, Learn Hillingdon can help them on their career path as an early years' practitioner in nurseries or pre-schools, or a support role in primary and secondary schools, including learning support assistants, teaching assistants or learning mentors.

A highlight this year is the introduction to childminding course, which will help prepare you to set up a home-based childcare setting, register with Ofsted and build a business plan.

The council also offers around 70 courses for Adults with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (ALDD) with experienced staff on hand to provide a nurturing and supportive environment. All courses are designed to help learners develop their English, maths and digital skills.

Hatice Cavus, 41, from Ruislip, a former finance manager in Turkey, moved to the UK with her family and decided on a career transition, choosing to become a teaching assistant.

Starting with the Preparing to Work in Schools Level 1 course, she then completed the Supporting Teaching and Learning Level 2 course. She also completed the Safeguarding and Prevent Level 2 course which helped enhance her understanding of core school subjects, and find employment, leading to a job offer from a primary school.

She said: "I strongly recommend these courses and Learn Hillingdon for those who'd like to start a career or expand their knowledge in education in a safe, friendly, and supportive environment."

Cllr Susan O'Brien, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "We're determined to ensure that our residents have opportunities for learning at all ages, to gain new or improve existing skills and help access job opportunities.

"Our range of part-time day, evening and online courses also include sessions to support health and wellbeing, and the flexible programme means you can learn when best suits you."
