Apply for social housing

Advice and information on applying for social housing, which is housing provided by the council and housing associations.

Hillingdon administers a choice-based lettings process through the Locata IT system. This allows tenants to register interest in and place "bids" on properties that are advertised on the platform.

If you're not eligible or do not qualify for the waiting list, there may be  other housing options available.

Evidence required

When submitting your application through Locata to join the councils housing register, you will need to provide the below information with your application. This information will help prove that you are eligible for housing and that you qualify to join the waiting list. Originals of these documents will be required for verification:  

Housing documents required:

  • Passports for all household members 
  • Home Office documents explaining your immigration status 
  • full birth certificates for all household members.

Waiting list documents required:

  • benefit award letters 
  • pension award letters 
  • payslips for the past 12 months 
  • if you are self-employed, audited accounts for the last 2 years 
  • financial information to show any businesses that you have an interest in 
  • proof of any properties/assets that you hold or have held in the last 10 years 
  • bank statements for the last 12 months for all accounts.

What happens next?

A case worker will review your submission and consider whether you are eligible to join the housing register, and if so, determine your priority banding.

  • You will not hear from us until we have registered your application. However, if we require further information from you, we will contact you using the contact details you provided in your application. 
  • On average, it takes about x weeks from the date that you have submitted all your documents for us to make our decision. 
  • If more than x weeks have passed since you submitted all the required information, please email x and we will provide an update on the progress of your application, and estimated decision time. 

If you application is successful you will receive: 

  • a reference number (known as a HIL or LIN number)  
  • a band indicating your level of housing need 
  • a priority date (normally the date your application was first registered with us) 

Your reference number will enable you to express an interest in available council and housing accommodation within the borough, by placing bids through the Locata system

You have the right to appeal your banding decision.
