How to join the library

Activate a temporary library membership or full membership online.

Create a temporary library membership

  1. Complete the joining process online.
  2. Once you have registered online, a temporary membership number will be issued to you.

This will give you immediate access to some of our free online resources

Upgrade to full library membership with a HillingdonFirst card

  1. If you're a HillingdonFirst card holder, email librarycontact@hillingdon.gov.uk with:

    - your temporary membership number
    - an official ID document, such as a passport or driving license
    - proof of your current address, such as a recent household bill
    - a photo of your HillingdonFirst card showing the 6337 number in full
  2. Once all the relevant documents have been received, a member of our team will check them, update your account and email you to let you know that your HillingdonFirst card is ready to start using as your library card.

Upgrade to full library membership without a HillingdonFirst card

  1. If you don't have a HillingdonFirst card, choose a library to collect your physical card from.
  2. Email your chosen library with:

    - your temporary membership number
    - an official ID document, such as a passport or driving license
    - a proof of your current address, such as a recent household bill

Our team will create/store the physical membership card and contact you to let you know it's ready to collect. They will also provide you with your library membership number, which will allow you to reserve items straight away.
  3. Collect your library card from your chosen library.

    Active library membership

Your membership is activated for 3 years from the moment you join and it will remain valid after this time period if you:

    • have books on loan or outstanding charges owed to us
    • you use your card within 12 months of the expiration date

Your membership will remain on the system for 6 years and is then scheduled for permanent deletion in accordance with the Limitation Act 1980.

As an active member, you can request information about what data we have on your own library membership record.
