Council to host a range of exciting Coronation-themed events

Monday 17 April 2023: Hillingdon Council has organised a variety of events for residents of all ages to come together and celebrate the forthcoming Coronation of King Charles III.

Launching today (Monday 17 April) is 'The King's Wardrobe' - a free, fun virtual reality trail in Uxbridge for families, featuring an animal-themed tale that sees the King of the Animal Kingdom meet with his friends at various stops who each present him with an item of clothing for his Coronation, a series of fun challenges along the way, and quizzes about British history. The trail will run for six weeks and all you need is a smartphone.  

During the bank holiday weekend (Saturday 6 to Monday 8 May), the Battle of Britain Bunker Exhibition and Visitor Centre in Uxbridge will host royal-themed activities between 10am and 3.30pm. Adults and children can get creative with trails, crown design and crafts in the Mess Hall. Activities are free with a general admission ticket. 

On Sunday 7 May, the Mayor of Hillingdon will host a special Coronation Picnic at Fassnidge Park, Uxbridge. The free outdoor event which is open to all will take place between 11am and 5pm and feature a live performance of vintage tunes from singing trio The Candy Girls and special performances from Hillingdon Music Service's orchestra, vocal soloists, local school groups and a range of dance groups. Bring along your picnic hamper and a blanket and enjoy the show.  

Coronation-themed events are planned at libraries across the borough starting from Monday 17 April. Activities include royal picnics, afternoon teas, a creative writing competition, craft sessions, storytimes and guided walks.  

Hillingdon is set to turn red, white and blue in honour of this historic occasion, with special coronation lamp post banners adorning high streets across the borough and flags in the borough's Green Flag award-winning parks and at the Civic Centre in Uxbridge.   

The council is also supporting 86 street parties across the borough on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May by providing free public liability insurance and road closures.
